what is a cardiologist?

A cardiologist is a physician who is specialized in diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases (heart and blood vessels diseases).

Know The Warning Sign

When should i see a cardiologist?

According to statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and woman; it has definitely crossed your mind. Fortunately, a routine check-up with your cardiologist can help you to be on top of your heart health!
If you experience any of the following symptoms, your physician may refer you to a cardiologist.

The Symptoms checklist includes:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Severe chest pains
  • Changes in heart rate or rhythm
  • Severely high blood pressure

A cardiologist can carry out tests for proper evaluation and diagnosis of the case. A cardiologist usually diagnoses and treats patient with a heart attack, heart failure, or other heart problems. He also helps you make decisions about your heart surgery, heart catheterization, and angioplasty.

Even without symptoms you may need to see a cardiologist!

This can happen if you have a family history of heart disease (as heart diseases have strong genetic predisposition), if you are a smoker, if you have diabetes, or if you are starting a new exercise program.

Tests & Procedures

Your physician may order some tests as listed below:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG):
This records the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes placed on the skin.
  • Ambulatory ECG:
Ambulatory electrocardiography, also called, ambulatory EKG, or a Holter monitor, is a battery-operated, portable device that measures and tape-records the heart’s electrical activity (ECG) continuously, typically for a duration of 24 to 48 hours so that any irregular heart activity can be correlated with an individual’s activity. The device uses electrodes or small conducting patches positioned on the chest and attached to a small recording monitor that is kept in a pocket or in a small pouch worn around the neck.
  • Stress test:
This records heart rhythms while carrying out exercise. This procedure is done using small metal electrodes stuck on to the chest and connected by wires to a monitor recording the rhythms. This shows the difference between heart rhythm during rest and during exercising. It gives an idea of how well the heart works and its limitations.
  • Echocardiogram:
It is an ultrasound picture that shows the structure of the heart chambers and surrounding major blood vessels. Now, it is the gold standard for the diagnosis of many heart diseases. It can measure the pressure in the heart chambers and the surrounding arteries. It can also measure how well the heart is pumping (cardiac output). It can detect inflammation around the heart, known as pericarditis. It can also identify infections of the heart valves.
  • Cardiac catheterization:
This is a procedure to detect how well your heart is working using a small tube called a catheter which is inserted into one of the major blood vessels which lead to the heart. During cardiac catheterization your doctor may:

    • Take x-rays using contrast dye injected through the catheter to detect any narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. This is called coronary angiography.
    • Perform a percutaneous coronary intervention such as coronary angioplasty with stenting to widen narrowed or blocked coronary arteries (the main blood supply of the heart).
    • Measure the pressure in your heart chambers.
    • Evaluate how well your heart chambers contract while pumping.
    • Take biopsy to examine it under the microscope.
  • Nuclear cardiology:
This is non-invasive techniques to study cardiovascular disorders. Examples are infarction imaging, single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT), planar imaging, and myocardial perfusion imaging.
  • Cardiac electrophysiology:
This is a subspecialty of cardiology which is concerned with elucidating, diagnosing, and treating the electrical activities of the heart. In this test, a catheter is inserted into a vein at the top of the leg. The catheter measures the electrical activities within the heart.
An EPS of the heart can help to show the cause of your symptoms, decide if a patient needs a pacemaker, help make a decision about the best treatment for arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm. Our Cardiac electrophysiologists at HIH can provide treatment for abnormal rhythms including implantable cardioverter defibrillators, cardiac ablation, or pacemakers.
