What is Obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics and gynaecology is the medical specialty that includes the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynaecology (encompassing the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). It’s commonly abbreviated as obs and gynae or OB/GYN.

A gynecologist / obstetrician is a physician who is fully trained to deal with the woman health conditions including pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period and the health of the female reproductive systems

When to see a Gynecologist /Obstetrician?

It is recommended to see a gynecologist annually for screening and at any time when you experience any of the following symptoms such as pelvic, vulvar, and vaginal pain or abnormal bleeding from the uterus.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine services

For patients whose pregnancies are considered high-risk, Hassabo International Hospital physicians can provide preconception counseling and the evaluation and management of all aspects of complicated on-going pregnancies.

Our physicians offer expert diagnosis and treatment of maternal medical and surgical complications including:

Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Management

The Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Management is a multidisciplinary service consisting of a team of maternal fetal medicine physicians, neonatologists, pediatric medical specialists and pediatric surgical specialists. Our physicians provide the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of conditions including:

  • Fetal genetic disorders
  • Fetal structural anomalies
  • Fetal infection
  • Fetal medical and s surgical complications.

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed by our Fetal Diagnosis and Management team include:

  • High-level ultrasound of fetal anatomy
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Amniocentesis
  • Fetal blood sampling (PUBS, funicentesis)
  • Fetal paracentesis
  • Fetal thoracocentesis
  • First trimester screening for fetal abnormal chromosomes
  • Other fetal procedures as appropriate

Genetics Services

Genetic consultation and counseling from HIH department of Pediatrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians to assess risk for genetic disorders and fetal anomalies and to provide information and recommendations regarding appropriate prenatal diagnosis. Coordination of DNA and biochemical testing for rare genetic disorders is available.

Consultation is warranted for patients with:

  • Advanced maternal age
  • Abnormal serum screening tests
  • Abnormal ultrasound findings
  • Known fetal chromosome disorders
  • Teratogen exposures
  • Family history of genetic disorders
  • History of recurrent pregnancy loss or previous still-birth Follow-up genetics evaluation at birth is provided whenever necessary. Preconception counseling is also available.

Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

For those patients suffering from any of the following conditions, our physicians provide expert diagnosis and the treatment necessary for:

  • Infertile couples including cervical, ovulatory and tubal factors
  • Disorders of reproductive endocrinology
  • Reproductive disorders pertaining to the pituitary gland, adrenal gland, thyroid gland and ovary

Women’s Exercise Laboratory

The Women’s Exercise Laboratory is available to help women of all ages optimize their health through participation in appropriate types and amounts of physical activity. Exercise advice is available for clinical applications. A number of medical conditions have been shown to be positively affected by regular physical activity. Exercise testing and prescription is available for these conditions as well as for healthy women who want to improve their overall health. For example, exercise prescriptions are currently being implemented for women with gestational diabetes. Similarly, other programs are available to optimize the role that exercise plays in weight maintenance, decreasing risk for cardiovascular disease, and for osteoporosis.

Services include exercise testing and prescription for:

  • Gestational diabetes and adult onset diabetes
  • Prevention of weight retention after pregnancy
  • Control of blood pressure in women
  • Determination and improvement of physical fitness levels
  • Cardiovascular health in post-menopausal women

Nutritional Support

Our nutrition services focus on women’s health concerns individualized according to specific needs. HIH Weight Management is an effective physician monitored program stressing long-term weight loss through healthy lifestyle changes. Pelvic Pain Clinic

Many women have pelvic pain at some point in their lives. This pain can be acute or chronic and may interfere with daily life resulting in missed work days and impairing sexual function. There are various causes of pain that can be gynecologic, gastrointestinal, urinary, musculoskeletal or psychosomatic. Chronic pelvic pain is challenging for the patient and physician. Hassabo Hospital International gynecologists take the time to listen to the patient and complete a thorough examination to try to discover the etiology of the pain.

Information About The Clinic

To be on top of your health, we encourage you to visit our clinics with any concerns or complaints you have. In other words, it is not wise to wait until you are severely ill to go to your physician. So the Obstetrics and Gynecology team of doctors, nurses, technicians, and other members are available at the clinics to meet your needs and ensure you receive the best possible care. Additional referrals and appointments can also be made at the clinics.

On visiting our clinics, your doctor will listen to your concerns, examine you thoroughly, and may ask for some tests to provide the proper diagnosis and treatment. Blood and urine samples may be taken. An ultrasound can be done also at the clinic.

When you schedule your appointment, we will ask you to provide important information that will help us evaluate your current condition:

  • All records that refer in any way to your condition
  • A complete list of your medications
  • All prior medical records, including x-ray films, biopsy reports, lab and/or pathology records
  • Any necessary referrals or prior authorization required by your insurance company
  • Be prepared with the questions you want to ask
  • bring a notebook and pen, we encourage you to take notes
  • if this is a follow up visit, you have to remember to write down the changes you have experienced since your last visit.

We value our relationships with referring physicians and ensure timely communication with regard to patient conditions. New and existing patient appointments are scheduled as quickly as possible with special attention to urgent needs.
Hassabo Hospital International obstetrics and gynecology physicians are available
24 hours a day, seven days a week

Each physician has a designated Surgical Coordinator who will meet with you and organize your entire pre-operative and post-operative surgical care. Your surgical coordinator is your liaison between you and your physician.

Services include:

  • Scheduling surgery
  • Providing educational materials
  • Thorough review of the surgical process and care
  • Coordinate pre-op and post-op clearances and appointments
  • Assistance with insurance referrals and prior authorizations
  • Coordinate home health and physical therapy
  • Coordinate DME Durable Medical Equipment services, such as crutches and cold therapy

Patients are generally seen by appointment, however if your situation is urgent, please inform our staff when you call or visit our around the clock Emergency Department. Every effort will be made to see you as soon as possible and the physician will be immediately notified to assess your needs.
