Department Overview

What is Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery?

Plastic surgery has two major components, Reconstructive plastic surgery which is all about restoring appearance and function to the human body after accident or illness and aesthetic (often known as cosmetic) plastic surgery, which is principally to alter the appearance from choice. Unlike most surgical specialties that are defined by an anatomical area, plastic surgery is defined by the surgical procedures and techniques that are carried out.

What is a Plastic Surgeon?

Plastic Surgeons: Focus on repairing defects to reconstruct a normal function & appearance.
Plastic surgery is described as a surgical specialty devoted to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to trauma, birth disorders, burns, and disease. Plastic surgery is intended to correct dysfunctional areas of the body and is, by definition, reconstructive in nature.

Types of Plastic Surgery Procedures:

  • Breast Reconstruction
  • Burn Repair Surgery
  • Congenital Defect Repair: Cleft Palate, Extremity Defect Repair
  • Lower Extremity Reconstruction
  • Hand Surgery
  • Scar Revision Surgery

What is a Cosmetic Surgeon?

Cosmetic Surgeons: Focus on Enhancing Appearance
The principles, techniques, and procedures of cosmetic surgery are entirely focused on enhancing a patient’s appearance. Enhancing aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are the key goals. Aesthetic surgery can be performed on a wide range of areas of the head, neck, and body. Since cosmetic procedures treat areas that function properly, cosmetic surgery is designated as elective. Cosmetic elective procedures are performed by doctors from a variety of medical fields, including plastic surgeons.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery Procedures:

  • Breast Enhancement: Breast Lift, Breast Augmentation, Breast Reduction
  • Facial Contouring: Rhinoplasty, Chin, or Cheek Enhancement
  • Facial Rejuvenation: Facelift, Neck Lift, Brow Lift, Eyelid Lift
  • Body Contouring: Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Gynecomastia Treatment
  • Skin Rejuvenation: Botox®, Laser Resurfacing, Filler Treatments

What’s more, HIH Surgeons perform consultation and reconstructive surgery on medical conditions involving congenital abnormalities as well cosmetic procedures of the abdomen, breast, hand, wrist, head and neck, male and female genital region. The surgeons at HIH are dedicated to continuing improvement in patient care. The plastic and reconstructive surgeons work closely with other specialists involved in each patient’s care to diagnose and provide timely surgical intervention for complex conditions.

Breast reconstruction

It can be psychologically difficult to lose one or both of your breasts due to cancer. If your breast cancer necessitates a mastectomy, reconstructive surgery can help you feel better about your appearance whilst you focus on your recovery from cancer.
We practice the most contemporary methods for breast reconstruction. This surgery can be performed either directly after the mastectomy, or after a period of recovery. Your surgeon will discuss the best option for you, depending on your health and the type of breast cancer surgery you’ll need.

  • DIEP flap surgery
HIH experienced surgeons perform this very specialized surgery using your own fat tissue for breast reconstruction. As a more natural type of reconstruction, DIEP flaps are often the best choice if you have scar tissue left over from mastectomy or if you’ve undergone radiation therapy following cancer. We make use of fat tissue from your own abdomen leaving the muscle intact. DIEP grants surgeons to reconstruct breast tissue that will grow and age with the patient and retain a natural consistency.
  • Implants
Implants are a viable alternative for women who wish or need to avoid flap surgery. Women who decide implant-based reconstruction may want to avoid scars on their abdomen or may want to avoid a major surgery due to age or other medical problems. Implant reconstruction is also a good alternative for patients with congenital breast deformities.
  • Contouring
To ensure a balanced, natural appearance, we can reshape your unaffected breast in addition to your reconstruction.

Hand & Wrist Surgery

Hand surgery is often required after an injury or if you suffer with arthritis, a tumor, a nerve problem or have a birth defect. Hand surgery involves a combination of tissue handling techniques including, microsurgery, nerve, tendon, and ligament and bone reconstruction. The hand is particularly unforgiving following injury or surgery, a team approach including the patient, hand therapist and properly trained surgeon is essential for the optimal outcome. Reconstructive wrist surgery facilitates the repair of damaged tissues and reduces the pain and weakness. If arthritis has developed, surgery will, in many cases, alleviate the pain.

General reconstructive Surgery

We offer plastic surgery for all forms of traumatic injury and congenital deformities, including:

  • Acute hand trauma
  • Complex head and neck (scalp, mid-face and jaw) reconstruction after cancer or trauma, as well as facial fracture repair
  • Reconstructive surgery to the chest, abdomen or extremities after trauma, cancer or surgery
  • Specialized surgery to care for vital organs after cardiac and vascular surgery.

  • Cleft lip and/or cleft palate
  • Craniofacial deformities of the forehead, skull and eyes
